Where to Stay

The Florida Keys, Island by Island

The Keys aren't one destination but a 113-mile chain of islands, each with its own character. Here's how the areas differ — and where the newest hotels sit.

Key West — Old Town

Best for: history, nightlife, sunsets

The end of the road and the heart of the action — Duval Street bars, Mallory Square sunsets, and Hemingway history within walking distance. This is where the 1926 La Concha Key West, Autograph Collection sits, the tallest building on the island, now with rooftop villas above Duval.

Key West — New Town

Best for: resorts, value, easy parking

The island's gateway along North Roosevelt Boulevard trades Old Town's density for resort-style space, free parking, and quick airport access. It's home to the new Blue Flamingo Resort, whose Backyard Pool & Social Club gives you a full resort base a short ride from Duval.

Marathon — Middle Keys

Best for: families, beaches, the Seven Mile Bridge

The midpoint of the chain, with the Keys' best swimmable beaches, the Turtle Hospital, and the gateway to Bahia Honda. The landmark Faro Blanco Resort & Yacht Club, Curio Collection by Hilton anchors the waterfront here beneath its iconic lighthouse, minutes from the Old Seven Mile Bridge.

Islamorada — Upper Keys

Best for: sportfishing, marinas, dining

The self-styled "Sportfishing Capital of the World," strung across a cluster of laid-back islands known for backcountry guides and waterfront restaurants. The new Three Waters Resort & Marina brings a full-service Marriott resort here, with its own marina and nine dining outlets across 15 bayfront acres.

Key Largo — The Diving Capital

Best for: diving, snorkeling, day trips

The first island past the mainland and the closest to Miami, built around John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and some of the best diving in the country. A natural first or last stop on a Keys road trip, with easy access to the reef and the Everglades.

The Lower Keys — Big Pine & Beyond

Best for: nature, quiet, Bahia Honda

The stretch between Marathon and Key West is the quiet, wild side of the chain — Bahia Honda State Park's beaches, the National Key Deer Refuge, and uncrowded backcountry water. Best for travelers who want nature and calm over crowds.

About the Keys

New Hotels in the Florida Keys

The Florida Keys have always traded on character over construction — a 113-mile chain of islands where conch houses, fishing marinas, and tiki bars matter more than glass towers. That scarcity of new building is exactly why a genuinely new hotel here is news, and the last two years have delivered a handful worth the drive down the Overseas Highway.

Key West leads the way. On Duval Street, the century-old "Grand Dame" La Concha Key West reemerged as a Marriott Autograph Collection hotel after a full restoration, adding rooftop villas with the best views in Old Town. At the island's New Town gateway, the Blue Flamingo Resort reinvented two retro motor lodges into a single playful resort built around a social pool club — the largest new opening anywhere in the chain.

Up the highway, the Upper and Middle Keys are catching up. In Islamorada, the Three Waters Resort & Marina brought a full-service Marriott resort to the Sportfishing Capital, with its own marina and a deep roster of restaurants across 15 bayfront acres. In Marathon, the landmark Faro Blanco Resort & Yacht Club reopened under Hilton's Curio Collection beneath its iconic lighthouse, minutes from the Old Seven Mile Bridge and the Keys' best beaches.

Choosing a base comes down to what you're after. Key West rewards travelers who want history, dining, and nightlife within walking distance; Islamorada and Marathon suit anglers, boaters, and families; and Key Largo, closest to the mainland, is built for divers and quick reef escapes. The islands sit a short drive apart, so many visitors split a trip across two.

We track every new opening across the chain so you can skip the dated inventory and book something current. As more properties break ground — and as the region's tight building-rights pipeline releases new projects — we'll keep this guide updated with the newest stays from Mile Marker 0 to Key Largo.

Good to Know

Florida Keys Hotels — FAQ

Key Largo, the first island, is about a one-hour drive from Miami. From there it's roughly another two to two-and-a-half hours down the Overseas Highway to Key West at the end of the chain, with Islamorada and Marathon in between. Key West also has its own international airport (EYW).

Many Keys properties welcome dogs, and the laid-back island culture is famously pet-friendly. Pet policies, weight limits, and fees vary by hotel and change often, so confirm the current policy directly when you compare rates and book.

Marathon is the most family-friendly base — it has the Keys' best swimmable beaches, the Turtle Hospital, the Dolphin Research Center, and easy access to Bahia Honda State Park. Resort-style options with pools, like the new Faro Blanco Resort & Yacht Club, suit families well.

Natural beaches are limited because a living coral reef just offshore blocks the wave action that builds sand. The best public beaches are in Marathon (Sombrero Beach) and the Lower Keys (Bahia Honda State Park). Many resorts create their own private beach areas and waterfront pools instead.

Islamorada is the Keys' sportfishing hub, with the deepest bench of charter captains and backcountry guides. Resorts with their own marinas make trips easiest — the new Three Waters Resort & Marina in Islamorada and Faro Blanco in Marathon both have on-site marinas.

Winter and spring (roughly December through April) bring the driest, mildest weather and the highest demand and rates. Summer is hotter and more humid with afternoon storms but lower prices, while fall is the quietest season and overlaps with hurricane season — worth factoring into flexible bookings.

Stay in Key West if you want walkable nightlife, dining, history, and sunsets — properties like La Concha and the Blue Flamingo Resort put you in the middle of it. Choose Islamorada, Marathon, or Key Largo if you'd rather have a quieter, water-focused base for fishing, diving, or family beach time. Many visitors split nights between Key West and one Upper or Middle Keys island.
