San Diego's hotel scene is in the middle of its biggest building cycle in a
generation. Where Los Angeles trades on glamour and San Francisco on tech,
San Diego moves on something steadier — its bay and beaches, a year-round
convention calendar anchored by Comic-Con, a deep Navy presence, and a
fast-growing biotech corridor. For years the city's lodging pipeline was one
of the smallest in California. That has changed completely.
The single biggest story is the Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center
— the largest hotel ever built in the region, a waterfront megaresort on the
Chula Vista Bayfront with its own water park, lazy river, and sprawling event
space. Downtown, the energy is just as strong: the Margot Hotel
arrived in the Gaslamp Quarter as one of the first properties in Hilton's new
Outset Collection, the design-led Granger Hotel
reopened a 1904 landmark as the city's first Marriott Design Hotels member, and
the Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown Little Italy
crowned the neighborhood's largest hotel with a rooftop skydeck pool.
The waterfront's biggest names are still to come. The ultra-luxury Fairmont Manchester San Diego
will rise as a 36-story tower on the North Embarcadero, joined by the
full-service Le Méridien
downtown and the dual-brand Tower 180
conversion in the urban core — together reshaping what the San Diego skyline
offers travelers.
Across the bay, Coronado is getting its own wave. The Bower Coronado
opened as a luxury boutique steps from the sand, with the design-driven Baby Grand
— from the team behind the celebrated Lafayette Hotel — arriving soon. For
travelers watching their budget, the renovated DoubleTree by Hilton San Diego Bayside
overlooks the harbor near the airport, and the all-suite Artifact Hotel
brings full in-room kitchens to downtown for families and longer stays.
Together, these properties give San Diego a genuinely modern hotel lineup across
ultra-luxury, design boutique, resort, upscale, and value categories — all of
it new, and all of it tracked here as it opens.
